Oltre che da un ridimensionamento del partito fondamentalista del presidente Ahmadinejad, le elezioni municipali iraniane sono state contrassegnate da un grande successo delle donne che hanno vinto le sfide con gli uomini in diversi grandi centri. La venticinquenne Fatemeh Houshmand, una studentessa vicina ai riformisti, è stata la più votata nella città meridionale di Shiraz. Ad Arak, nel centro, a raccogliere più voti di tutti è stata Fariba Abagheri, responsabile della sezione giovanile del principale partito riformista, il Fronte per la partecipazione. Le donne hanno vinto anche ad Ardebil, a Zanjan e a Hamedan.
Sono state circa 7.000 le donne che sono scese in campo nelle elezioni municipali su un totale di 235.000 candidati. Le donne stanno guadagnando gradualmente posizioni nella vita politica nazionale e la loro presenza si fa sentire anche nelle universita' dove ormai sono più numerosi degli uomini.
